Heritage Lottery Funding boost for elephant art trail
NR5 Project has been awarded £24,000 from Heritage Lottery Fund’s Young Roots Programme for their One City…One Herd community project as part of the Norwich wide Go Elephants! Public art event next Summer.
One City…One Herd will work alongside Norfolk County Council’s Libraries and Museum Services to connect Go Elephants to Norwich’s rich cultural heritage. Young People aged 13-19 will be given the opportunity to work in Norwich Museum Study Centre alongside artists to create ideas to design and decorate a 3ft fibre glass elephant that will be exhibited in Summer 2008. NR5 Project is the community partner to this city wide event and will work with local community groups, young people and arts practioneers to produce 6 community entries.
Paula Sanchez, Business Development Director at The NR5 Project said “ It is fantastic that the Heritage Lottery Fund have awarded us funding to bring a community and heritage element to this city wide event. We are delighted to be able to offer this opportunity to a variety of community organisations, young people and artists and look forward to their interpretations of Norwich’s rich cultural heritage”.
Go Elephants! will see a herd of up to fifty baby elephant sculptures creating an artistic urban safari through the streets, parks and public spaces in the heart of Norwich, from 23rd June until 31st August 2008.
Go Elephants! is an initiative led by The Forum Trust and Wild in Art with the objective of moving art from the gallery and placing it on the streets of Norwich in a fun and inclusive way. In a unique collaboration between public and private, creative and business sectors, each of the fifty elephant sculptures will be decorated by an individual artist or community group with many sponsored by local businesses.
Darren Cross, Events Manager at The Forum said: “We are delighted that this bid to the Heritage Lottery Fund has been successful. Go Elephants! is about celebrating the creativity and talent at the heart of all of Norwich’s communities, and this grant will enable us to do just that.”
In addition to the community projects, local artists are being invited to submit designs for elephants. After a selection process, successful artists will be commissioned and invited to decorate their elephants in a number of public painting sessions before the finished elephants stampede into the city in June 2008.
